What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?
IUI is a method of assisted reproduction which consists of depositing a semen sample inside the woman’s uterus. This semen sample is prepared in the laboratory. The objective of artificial insemination is to keep the process of fertilisation as much natural as possible. The aim of this technique is to increase the potential of the sperm and improve the chances of the egg being fertilised.
When is it used?
It is used mainly in cases of mild male factor infertility, male ejaculatory problems, and unexplained infertility (where there is no as such defined reason for infertility). It is also used in cases where serodiscordancy is there in HIV and Hepatitis infected patients.
What is the success rate with this method of treatment?
Success of this treatment in first cycle is around 18%-20%.
What does an IUI treatment involve?
It involves instillation of washed semen sample into a woman’s uterus around the time when the egg is ready for rupture or has ruptured within last 24 hours.
Is it always necessary for women to have medications for increasing egg growth when undergoing IUI?
It is not mandatory. Normally in one menstrual cycle a woman grows one egg but in cases where medication is given there is a possibility of more than one egg which increases the chances of success.
How is the semen sample prepared for IUI?
There are various methods for preparing semen sample depending on the sample. Generally, sample is prepared by what is known as double density method. It is better to report at least 1-2 hours prior to your procedure so that enough time is given to prepare the sample and have a sample with good count and motility.
Does Intrauterine Insemination involve anaesthesia?
In majority of the cases of IUI, anaesthesia is not required It is very much a personal preference, if one wants to get it done under sedation or anaesthesia.
When does a couple come to know after IUI if it is successful or not?
It is either by a urine pregnancy test or blood pregnancy test. Your doctor will guide you after IUI as to when it should be done.
